How to Pay Cheap Summer Electric Bills

If you don't have insulated drapes, they're a good investment for the heat of summer or the cold of winter. Draft protectors (a tightly rolled towel will do this, too) placed at the bottom of windows work well, too. If you have storm windows, keep them on to really save on cooling as well as heating costs.

2) Use layers over windows--blinds, sheers, drapes and even valances all together will insulate your windows really well. Cover windows on and around doors as well. Use caulking for windows that you don't need to open. If doors don't seal tightly, use weather stripping, caulking in cracks, and draft protectors.

3) Keep the filters in your air conditioning system clean. Most kinds can be vacuumed a couple of times before tossing them which will save you money,
too. Check them once a month at least and more if you have pets.

4) If you have ceiling fans, keep them going. They really help you to be comfortable even at a little higher temperatures. They are well worth the investment if you don't have them. If you are in an apartment or rental property,where you don't want to invest in ceiling fans, use standing fans in the rooms you use most.

5) When you cook, use the microwave, crock pot, electric skillet and toaster oven rather than the stove. Although some of these are all day use items, they are less heat producing than the stove. Keep anything on the stove top or in other appliances covered to prevent heating up the house as well.

6) Wear light cotton clothing that fits loosely for the coolest outfit choice. It smart--even indoors to dress to beat the heat.

7) Keep door opening and closing to a minimum. Every time the door is opened, you are air conditioning the great outdoors. This is something you may have to work on with children, but it's still a smart move.

8) One last tip; your power company may have a twelve month plan where you pay the same amount each month. It will be a little higher in the winter but it won't kill you in the summer months.
