Follow on Google News | Deaf Action Celebrates Deaf Awareness Week In InverurieDeaf Action is inviting members of the deaf community across Aberdeenshire to attend Information Events taking place in Inverurie to celebrate National Deaf Awareness Week 2010. The two events will take place at Inverurie Catholic Church Hall.
By: Deaf Action Since the 1st April 2010, in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council, Deaf Action has been delivering a new service to deaf people in Aberdeenshire. The service Deaf Action delivers through Aberdeenshire provides deaf and hard of hearing people with advice and coping strategies on hearing loss in addition to providing specialist equipment which can improve the quality of life of deaf people at home. There are approximately 1 million people living in Scotland with some degree of hearing loss – that is 1 in 5 of the total population. In Aberdeenshire itself, it is estimated that there could be 34,000 deaf and hard of hearing people. Deaf Action believes it is important to hold information events during Deaf Awareness Week (28th June – 04th July) to invite the community to discuss the services available to them. Hearing loss can lead to difficulties carrying out everyday activities and in some cases, feelings of isolation, embarrassment and loss of self-esteem. The events will consist of information stalls, presentations and a questions and discussion session and will be hosted by Liz Scott Gibson, Director Deaf Action. # # # Deaf Action is a deaf-led registered charity (SCO 09898) established in 1835 and managed by an elected Executive Council. We work with Deaf British Sign Language users, as well as those who are deafened, deafblind and hard of hearing. Deaf Action provides a range of services to deaf* people and those that work with them, including: Information, Advice & Guidance; Communication Support (British Sign Language / English Interpreters, Deafblind Communicators, Lipspeakers and Notetakers); Specialist Equipment; Social Care; Multimedia Translation of information and websites to make them more accessible to British Sign Language Users. *The term deaf includes those who use British Sign Language, are deafened, deafblind and hard of hearing End
