June 29, 2010 - PRLog -- NORCROSS, Ga. - New medical device inventors and innovators in search of even the most basic instructions and advice about how to develop and launch a new medical product have often had to scour the Internet to gather resources of varying quality and relevance. But courtesy of the new How To Guide for Medical Device Innovators announced today by MediPurpose®, they now have a more convenient and comprehensive collection of helpful content relevant to their needs.

Divided into categories that span the myriad of requirements, considerations and obstacles faced by medical device innovators--including intellectual property, regulations and quality management systems--the guide is as much an outline of the “concept to commercialization” process as it is a directory for more advanced resources and solutions.

For example, “How to Get a Patent for a New Medical Device or Idea” introduces the need for medical device inventors to file an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, answers frequently asked questions (such as how long the process takes and how much it costs) and provides links to the USPTO and other relevant agencies and resources.

Widely known for its success in medical product manufacturing and distribution--such as with its popular line of SurgiLance® safety lancets--MediPurpose is developing the guide as a way to give something back to the medical device community and to strengthen it, said MediPurpose founder and CEO Patrick Yi.

Yi was quick to caution readers that the guide is not intended to present his company as an authority in every category or subject. Instead, it is a peek behind the curtain and introduces them to some essential concepts, processes and strategies for successfully moving a new medical device from concept to commercialization.

“For example, intellectual property and patents: We are not patent attorneys, nor do we offer patent legal services,” said Yi. “But, as experienced medical device innovators, we can use our knowledge of the general principles and processes involved in getting a medical device patent to help other innovators understand their options.”

Yi also said the guide will be continuously expanded, especially as MediPurpose continues to discover its readers’ educational and informational needs.

"Over the last few years, medical device innovators have been reaching out to us for help with refining and introducing their innovations, which influenced our decision to launch our new Innovation division last year," said Yi. "Since MediPurpose has the funding, proven methodology and global experience to assist innovators and inventors through the entire process, it became evident that it was a direction we needed to pursue."

“However, what we collectively know about the medical product development and commercialization processes is not widely available in a thoughtfully organized and well-written online format. By providing this information to the medical product innovation community, we hope to eliminate a lot of the problems that can discourage medical device innovation.”

Yi knows a thing or two about the challenges faced by newbies to the medical product industry. When he co-launched his medical device startup in Singapore in 1999, he was already a successful entrepreneur and businessperson in other business areas, but had virtually no experience with medical products. With the Internet still in its infancy and limited access to reliable resources in the medical device industry, Yi had to rely on his own business acumen, learning from his mistakes, and even a bit of luck before eventually building his company into a profitable and award-winning enterprise.

“The success of the guide will ultimately be determined by how well the community engages with it—which includes its content creation and development,” said Yi. That is why he is actively encouraging the medical device community to:
