It’s All Science: ADVANCE Book Club for Nurses selects Still Alice

June 18, 2010 - PRLog -- Alice Howland is a fictional 50-year-old Harvard psychology professor who learns she has early onset Alzheimer’s disease in the opening chapters of Still Alice by Lisa Genova. This brilliant linguistics specialist, for whom language is everything, begins to lose her ability to remember words, lecture schedules, her way home and even her husband’s name.

Author Genova, a Harvard-trained neuroscientist, outlines what happens to the Alzheimer’s patient’s brain — which have reduced levels of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important in learning and memory. She presents how the hippocampus, becomes clogged with plaques and tangles.

Anyone who has had a loved one or friend with Alzheimer’s, will find this a valuable read.
