Kluft & Co.'s hand-tufted, king-size Palais Royale mattress and box spring, which contains 10 layers and more than 10 pounds of cashmere, mohair, silk and New Zealand wool that has been washed, dried and crimped.
"We really want the consumer to get a better night's sleep," Mr. Kluft says. "When you think about it, the mattress is the most important thing in your house. You spend more time on your bed than anywhere else."
How much better will the average person sleep on these super deluxe beds? According to sleep expert Clete Kushida, medical director of the Stanford University Sleep Medicine Center, "For the vast majority of people who are generally healthy, bed surface won't make much of a difference in terms of their sleep." But if a person has a sleep disorder or physical condition the makes it difficult to sleep, the sleeping surface of the mattress can have a drastic effect.
