"Breast Ultrasound uses painless sound waves directed through the breast tissue to help evaluate abnormalities detected on physical exam by a woman or her physician. It is also very helpful in the diagnosis of equivocal mammographic findings. Its most frequent use is seen in women who have palpable lumps or other areas of concern that may be hidden by dense tissue on a mammogram," said Dr. Staiger.

In such cases, the ultrasound, which allows the breast imager to see differences in the breast tissue texture, can help tell the difference between benign fluid-filled cysts, normal tissue or other benign breast anatomy, and solid masses that may require further evaluation.
