June 6, 2010 - PRLog -- Many people know what heroin is, but there are still others who remain uninformed about the dangerous addictive drug known simply as, "H." Heroin is an extremely addictive illicit drug which is commonly abused and is the fastest acting in the family of opiate drugs. Heroin comes in either a white or brown powder, though there are also black tar varieties which come from international sources. The drug is made from morphine which is derived from the poppy plant.

Heroin is readily available and is becoming more pure as it is easier to move the drug into and out of the United States. Most often, heroin is cut with other chemicals and substances such as strychnine which is a poison used to kill vermin and can be toxic to humans as well. Because someone with a heroin addiction can never be sure of the drugs purity level, it is extremely dangerous every time someone uses it. There is a greater risk associated with heroin abuse than with any other drug and other problems that result from chronic abuse are HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, collapsed veins, secondary infections and much more.

Heroin can be administered in a variety of ways but the most common is for users to inject the drug into a vein which produces a more profound effect. An addict may use heroin several times throughout the day and with time the addiction grows to chronic and dangerous levels. The only way a person can truly get over an addiction to heroin is with the help of a professional drug treatment center; otherwise it is unlikely the drug can be resisted by even the strongest person.

When someone injects themselves with heroin, the effects take place within a short period of time most often within 4-7 minutes after initial injection a person reports feeling intense euphoria and a rush. No matter how the drug is taken, whether smoked, injected or snorted, the results are the same and the damage is severe. The very first time a person uses heroin an addiction can happen, a person is driven to use more of the drug to avoid feeling symptoms of withdrawal and the cycle begins.

Heroin is addictive in all forms, and once a person is stuck in the vicious cycle of addiction, bad things are bound to occur. A person will go to great lengths to be able to use heroin and will often turn their back on responsibility, friends, family and everything else important. Nothing else matters but the drug and the consequences are always negative and far-reaching, the addict and their family will undoubtedly suffer from the devastation the drug wreaks.

In order to beat a heroin addiction, a person must be ready to make a firm and dedicated effort to seek the help of a professional drug treatment. Heroin continues to be a real and serious problem in the United States and the only way to combat the situation is by teaching and educating the public about the various toxic and destructive side effects that stem from addiction. As with any drug addiction, heroin can be beaten with the right treatment and adequate time, anyone can become the healthy, sober person they are meant to be.
