Surgery for Spinal Disk Problems

When a herniated disk causes weakness or paralysis of the nerves that control muscles of the back and limbs, or if you lose control of your bladder or bowels because of the damaged disk, your doctor may recommend surgery.

Microsurgery

A surgeon may use a hollow needle to remove some of the soft core of a swollen disk so that it no longer puts pressure on a nerve. Other micro-surgical procedures can remove fragments of core disk material that have broken through the fibrous outer wall.

Diskectomy

Diskectomy is the surgical removal of part of a herniated disk and is done to relieve pressure on the nerve. In this procedure, the core of the disk is removed, leaving the tough outer casing in place between the vertebrae.

Spinal Fusion

Fusion (surgically fusing vertebrae together to immobilize them) can also be done for back instability. It sometimes brings long-term relief, but there is no guarantee of permanent recovery.

Laminectomy

Another surgical option is a procedure called a laminectomy, in which a small amount of vertebral bone is removed to relieve pressure on the nearby nerve.

Any invasive therapy near the spinal cord is potentially dangerous. So surgery should be undertaken only in extreme cases, when the herniated disk is causing weakness or paralysis of nerves going to muscles or serving basic body functions, such as bowel or bladder function

Here’s how it works:
It’s likely that, after being diagnosed, you will have already undergone several specific diagnostic tests to confirm the condition. Once you register with SimpleCare you will be sent a list of laboratory and radiological tests that need to be sent to us. These diagnostic tests can be sent through our online service or copied to a DVD or CD and mailed to our Miami office or directly to our Spain office. Once you have had your operation or treatment, you will receive detailed medical notes and a detailed summary of the procedure to provide your primary care physician on your return. This debrief also contains details of any follow-up procedures you may need to conduct with your doctor.
