June 4, 2010 - PRLog -- There is nothing glamorous about heroin abuse and addiction; it is a dangerous drug that costs countless numbers of lives each year. With the rise in heroin abuse in the United States, use and abuse of the drug is at epidemic proportions and the problem is virulent, overtaking people of all genders, ages and socioeconomic status.

In the United States, one in every ten suicides can be directly attributed to use of heroin either directly or indirectly. With all of the statistics showing how dangerous the drug can be, it is a wonder why people continue using and abusing heroin. The fact is that people abuse heroin for various different reasons, but the main reason being reported is the way it produces euphoric feelings in the user and people must continue taking the drug to prevent uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that occur when the drug is stopped.

There are many ways people use and abuse heroin, such as snorting, smoking and injecting the drug. Injecting the drug is the most popular method of choice among users because of the intense initial high which is felt almost instantaneously after being injected into the vein. Heroin when smoked is placed on a spoon and a flame is lit underneath and the user inhales the fumes, the effects are not as intense but this method is still popular.

Heroin addiction is so common that rehab centers are reporting skyrocketing admissions for people seeking treatment. The best way to help someone who is addicted to heroin is to encourage treatment and help them realize there is a life after addiction and healing is possible. Heroin is one of the most addictive drugs around and treatment is both intensive and aggressive, rehab facilities know all about the various dangers which accompany withdrawal and do their best to make the patient as comfortable as possible during this particular phase of treatment.

Once detoxification has been completed, the rehab facility will place the patient in an inpatient care program. While enrolled in an inpatient program, the person will participate in group and individual counseling, behavioral modification therapy, life skills courses, psychotherapy and other modalities which increase the chances for the patient getting and staying clean and sober.

A person can become addicted to heroin the very first time the drug is used, which is one of the reasons why rehab centers treat the patient so intensely. The withdrawal symptoms that occur when the drug is stopped are serious and can rapidly become life-threatening if not monitored by a team of licensed, skilled, medical professionals. The drug is nothing to play around with and casual use can quickly spiral out of control and develop into full-blown addiction in no time at all.

Heroin addiction takes over a person's entire life and the results are always dangerous and sometimes fatal. The drug causes serious health complications and tears families apart. Through time and proper treatment, an addict can overcome the temptations of heroin and learn new healthier ways to deal with problems and break the cycle of addiction once and for all.
