By: Renée Hébert, ICA International Montreal, QC - June 2, 2010 - The global financial crisis has increased the vulnerability of many of the world’s poorest people, while at the same time leaving many NGOs with decreased funding. In order to continue to support sustainable solutions, many charitable organizations are finding creative opportunities to promote their message and reach out to Canadians. The Tour de l’Île de Montreal, a community cycling event held annually in Montreal, has provided such an opportunity for one Montreal-based NGO. ICA International is a charitable organization that supports grassroots, participatory development in communities around the world. On Sunday, June 6, ICA International will ride the Tour de l’Île to help raise awareness and much needed funds for their work. ICA International has dubbed their initiative the “Tour to Transform Lives” and hopes it will become an annual event. “The Tour de l’Île is a fantastic community event that promotes sustainability and community participation – two values that are central to our development approach,” notes Michael Watson, ICA program director. “By joining the ICA International Tour to Transform Lives team, riders can demonstrate their commitment to cycling, sustainability and community development.” ICA International works with member organizations in 30 countries around the world to promote participatory, sustainable solutions to problems of poverty, inequality, and environmental destruction. The Tour to Transform Lives will support work towards empowering women and youth, encouraging sustainable resource management, and combating HIV and AIDS.
