May 19, 2010 - PRLog -- The Spill Management Group offers to vessel and shoreside facility operators, and their insurers, the comprehensive range of services required to fully address the exposures resulting from a vessel or shoreside spill into adjacent waters. To meet those needs Matrix has assembled both in house and through our industry partnerships a team that is able to offer a complete range of spill management, natural resource damage assessment (NRDA), restoration, cost accounting, third party claims and litigation support services. The bundling of these services is unique in our industry and offers our clients a single, coordinated source for the handling of pollution related losses. As the complexity of losses continues to rise, and the need for interaction between science, finance and claims providers becomes more essential, we believe that our approach will soon become the industry standard.

Integral to our handling of all aspects of a loss is a recognition that the cost of handling, and the ultimate exposures that might result from a maritime pollution loss, can spiral out of control if not properly addressed from the outset. Our underlying philosophy is that usage of experienced experts is the best means of avoiding such a scenario. Exemplifying this concept is Matrix’s approach of utilizing for NRD work, a combination of science personnel and former state and federal trustees. By employing this approach, we at Matrix have found that the typical adversarial scenario between the responsible party and trustees can be minimized, or even eliminated. This is often an essential factor in producing a prompter more favorable ultimate assessment, at the lowest possible cost. Currently on our team are both former state and federal trustees, who in tandem with our extensive roster of science personnel can offer the most comprehensive possible range of services required for an NRD defense effort.

Handling of third party claims, cost accounting and litigation support employs a similar philosophy. Our combination of experienced legal, financial, adjusting and investigative talent, supported by proprietary claims and cost accounting software, is able to offer a full service, prompt and cost effective solution to the third party claim and cost issues that inevitably arise following pollution losses. Once again by taking a proactive, but cost sensitive approach, we have learned that overall claimant tensions can be reduced, and more favorable ultimate results obtained. Similarly, when doing cost accounting a comprehensive, proactive and timely approach to gathering and assessing documentation has consistently proven itself to be the approach that provides our clients with the greatest degree of certainty at the lowest possible cost. Over the past 20 years our team has been involved on as many or more major losses as any other group presently in the industry.

The Spill Management Group will be lead by Peter Wiswell as Director of Claims Management and Spill Response. Mr. Wiswell brings with him 30 years of experience as a practicing attorney, International Group P&I Club general commercial correspondent, response manager for a leading vessel pollution underwriter, arbitrator and insurance consultant to lenders. Combining these skills and experience, alongside Matrix’s existing NRDA and restoration expertise, we are confident that the Spill Management Group will soon be an industry leader.
