Homeopathy No Better Than Witchcraft Say Doctors

May 17, 2010 - PRLog -- Outrage developed amongst patient groups in the UK today as a group of doctors voted to ban homeopathic treatments from use in the national health service.

A  motion at the British Medical Association's junior doctor conference was strongly supported by the majority of doctors present. They attacked the concept of homeopathy and other alternative medicine approaches - saying that they had no place in the NHS in these troubled financial times. They also called on the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) to urgently review the role of treatments like homeopathy and to justify why money should be spent providing them to patients.

Dr Tom Dolphin, deputy chairman of the BMA’s junior doctors committee in England, told the conference: “Homeopathy is witchcraft. It is a disgrace that nestling between the National Hospital for Neurology and Great Ormond Street [in London] there is a homeopathic hospital paid for by the NHS”.

Gordon Lehany, chairman of the BMA’s junior doctors committee in Scotland, said it was wrong that some junior doctors were spending part of their training rotations in homeopathic hospitals, learning principles that had no place in science.

These views are certain to cause a great deal of anger amongst the many patients who have found benefit from homeopathic treatments of conditions ranging from fatigue to gout.

Many patient advocacy groups have already countered the arguments put forward by the junior doctors and claimed that they misrepresent the role and actions of homeopathic treatments.

Joint pain expert Doctor Gordon Cameron said today:

" I really think that there is a role for a very wide range of treatment options and that it's far more important to tailor therapeutic approaches to the needs of patients than to jump down hard on any one area of medicine. What works for one person will not work for another - that's how medicine has always been"

Doctor Cameron has previously used homeopathic treatments in conditions such as gout or other joint related conditions.
