May 4, 2010 - PRLog -- Distilleria Bottega celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the Expedition of the Thousand with a special bottle designed by Sandro Bottega and made of mouth-blown glass by Bottega’s Venetian craftsmen.

To commemorate the campaign undertaken in May 1860 by the revolutionary general Giuseppe Garibaldi, that overthrew the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (Naples) and permitted the union of southern Italy and Sicily with the north in March 1861, Bottega has created a 70 ml bottle featuring the symbol of the Italian Republic, the Italian Flag. The bottle contains a mix of grappas produced with 9 vines representing the entire Peninsula: Prosecco, Nebbiolo and Pinot Grigio from the North of Italy; Sangiovese, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo e Verdicchio from the Center of Italy; Nero d’Avola, Aglianico and Primitivo di Manduria from the South of Italy.

A collectors’ item, this limited edition 150th Anniversary bottle comes in only 1000 copies, so supplies are limited.

A little history: A revolt in Sicily, beginning on April 4, 1860, caused Garibaldi to make the decision to begin his plan of unite Italy, with an attack on the Bourbon kingdom in the south. On the night of May 5–6, he embarked from Quarto (a suburb of Genoa) with more than 1,000 men, mostly idealistic young northerners. Narrowly missing contact with the Bourbon Navy, the expedition landed at the western Sicilian port of Marsala on May 11.
