The roots of VSU stem from Yuryev (Derpt) University in Estonia. It was established as early as as 1802 following a decree of Russian Emperor Alexander I. For More Details: http://www.lcstudies.com After the German occupation of Estonia during the First World War, Yuriyev University had taken on a Germanic educational structure. Possible dissolution of the university caused deep concerns about its future. When the situation became critical, the Russian professors and students were instructed to leave Estonia. Meanwhile, the people of Voronezh were petitioning the local authorities, requesting a University in the city centre. A decision was made to move the University of Yuryev to Central Russia, and Voronezh was named as a desirable location. In September 1918 special trains transported 39 professors, 45 teachers and 43 assistants and about 800 students from Yuryev (currently Tartu) to Voronezh. The first lectures started at VSU on November 12, 1918. At the beginning of 1919, there were 10,000 students enrolled in Voronezh University. All wishing to study were accepted. However, many of those who became students had not really understood that it was not easy to study at a university. The aftermath of the Civil War meant that the University had to face many problems, accompanied by a massive influx of students with various levels of knowledge and of various ages. It was only in 1923 that entrance selection examinations were introduced. In August 1920, a pioneering pre-University course was established, designed to prepare working-class students for higher education. By June 1941 the University consisted of 6 faculties, 40 departments, 4 museums, a library, 3 research units and a publishing house. 32 professors and 55 senior lecturers worked at the University. There were 2,500 full-time and 1,786 part-time students. At the beginning of the Second World War, almost all students and more than half of the academic staff of VSU left for military service. The risks imposed by war necessitated the re-location of VSU to Tatarstan. This movement commenced in 1942. By 1943, 80% of Voronezh had been destroyed. In August 1943 the University returned to Voronezh. It was a difficult process, since the University buildings and student residences had been totally ruined, and the books and equipment had been plundered. Most faculties were temporarily placed in Lipetsk, 200 kilometres from Voronezh. The Chemistry Faculty and the 1st year Biology students started lectures in the half-destroyed buildings of VSU. The whole University finally returned to work in Voronezh in September 1944. Lectures and research went on under very tough circumstances. At the same time, the people of Voronezh were working together to restore the city from a state of ruin. # # # L&C Language and Culture Co.,Ltd. has been working for the past 9 years in voronezh,Russian Federation.
