May 3, 2010 - PRLog -- Due to tough economic times and colleges being faced with massive tuition increases to maintain current standards, competition between students is becoming increasing fierce for Department of Education Student Loans.  Criteria used to measure good loan package submitters now will turn packages that have completely and comprehensively followed application guideline to be rejected far more often than ever before.  Securing alternative Student Loans and financing is increasingly more common for students who wish to attend college.

Some options are for the parents to take out loans with private lending institutions, securing those loans with the equity in their home or other assets they may have.  This is an increasingly difficult option as over the last three years, many parents now find that they upside down and backwards , owing more on their home than the home’s value, and leaving their children to pursue other funding options.  Some lending institutions will make private loans to students seeking to attend college if they can find some other responsible adult to co-sign the loan, but these types of loans are at best difficult to get unless you have relatives that are willing to help you.

You can also research various options for grants and other financial assistance programs provided for though philanthropic actions by local businesses and community leaders.  These are options that are going to require you to maintain an outstanding GPA and potentially require you to meet other eligibility factors as well.  So ensuring that you perform at the highest possible academic level will help you in not only finding alternative student loans and grants, it will also help you set yourself apart from your competition for Federal Student Loans provided by the Department of Education.

The competition has never been fiercer for placement into college.  If you are still in school and fairly young, consider talking to your parents about securing a prepaid college fund.  Many states offer these types of funds as well as other financial mechanisms designed to help parents and kids save for their college tuition.

Community colleges are also becoming increasingly popular for many college bound students as the fees associated with tuition are generally far less than attending a State or other highly prestigious higher learning institution.
