April 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Before attempting to paint your wall or any surface, you should make sure the preparation work has been done. By preparation I mean the sanding of existing imperfections, apply your primer, tapping around the edges with proper tape to protect the wooden trims. Of course you have already laid out the drop cloth to protect your floor. Most paint used on today's drywall are flat water based paint, oil based paint are used on trims, doors, sometimes furniture, but no on drywalls. It's a good idea to start your painting project with a brand new roller, try not to reuse an old roller from another project. Trust me you will regret that decision very soon, it is absolutely vital to start your painting project as clean as possible. This is also true for your painting pan, older paint that has already dried in your pan may be mixed into the new paint creating an undesirable color. With your new roller in place, you are ready to work, but wait you need to start your painting project with a brush first. Ideally a two and half inch tapered paint brush, that is in reasonable quality. You should start your project by painting the outside edge first make sure not to get any paint on your trim and ceiling. The pattern will look like a colored box, and from there you can use your roller to fill in the blanks.

A common mistake one can make when using the roller is directional control, what I mean by this is if your roller travels up and down the drywall on an angle the result can be undesirable. When roller is traveling on an angle especially in multiple angles, the end result is a wall with many paint lines that is visible even after the paint has dried. The proper way of using the roller is to have directional control. Use the roller's full width as your guide and roll straight up and down, this should result in a much even finish, and paint should be applied within two passes. Another problem with rolling your roller on an angle is it can create paint drops. Paint dropped on a surface will create a paint blob, or worse on your furniture or floor. So the next time you grab a roller, remember to roll in the up or down direction, not on an angle.
