Battle of the Legends - Washington Combat Brings First Major MMA Event to DC

DC’s premier MMA promoter, Washington Combat, to make history May 15 with Battle of the Legends event at the DC Armory.
April 27, 2010 - PRLog -- Attention all mixed martial arts fans! Washington Combat presents the first major MMA event in the District of Columbia, Battle of the Legends, featuring some of the biggest names in pro-fighting, to be held May 15 at the DC Armory at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.

The main event features a matchup between MMA legends Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo, a four-time Brazilian Muay Thai champion, and Gary “Big Daddy” Goodrich, former PRIDE contender and hard-hitting fighter. Rizzo holds a 32-9-0 record, and Goodrich’s professional record currently stands at 23-20-1. Rizzo versus Goodrich is the most anticipated matchup of the night. The co-main event will feature champion belt winner, Jordan Smith, to take on Gracie Barra Combat team member, Gustavo “Ximu” Machado. Smith holds a perfect 11-0 professional record, while Machado’s impressive career record stands at 18-7-1.

The full fight card for this event contains nine match-ups, including many big-name fighters as well as up-and-coming talent making their professional debuts. "We are excited to bring a high level of mixed martial arts to the Nation's Capital," said Washington Combat Founder Bob Hisaoka. "MMA is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and our area has many loyal fans. We can't wait for those fans to be able to see, up close and in person, some of the best fighters in mixed martial arts."

Several special guests well known to MMA are also expected to make appearances at the event. Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Kenny Florian, John Lewis, Mike Swain and other VIPs are scheduled to attend. Renowned worldwide for his involvement with Strike Force and the UFC, Mario Yamasaki will referee the fights at Battle of the Legends.
