Conyers Nissan in Conyers Georgia - The Safer "Smart Pedal" Standard on All Nissan Vehicles

April 18, 2010 - PRLog -- Conyers Georgia, Conyers Nissan wants to let their customers know that Nissan uses a brake-override system or "smart pedals" that can slow a vehicle even if a gas pedal sticks or if it's depressed by a driver at the wrong time. The system works simply: When brakes are pressed at the same time a gas pedal is engaged, the electronic signal propelling the car is interrupted, and the car automatically is slowed to idle.

The technology is on all Nissan and Infiniti models. Automakers, Toyota, Volvo and Honda are among those without the system.

Most automakers would face about $1 million in development costs -- typically, less than $1 a vehicle for new cars -- to add the feature during production, three auto safety engineers say. Such a sum is a pittance in the auto world, where companies frequently build dozens of $500,000 preproduction vehicles before one is sold.

Honda and Acura vehicles don't allow brakes to override the gas pedal because there are "trade-offs," says Honda spokesman Chris Naughton. "We continue to accept application of the accelerator and brake pedals as representing the driver's intention," says Naughton.

Tom Baloga, BMW's vice president of engineering, disagrees: "The more you get into electronics, the more you have to have the electronics check for illogical circumstances."

Although some say the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration should require brake overrides, Baloga says, "based on the circumstances, I would expect this will be voluntarily introduced pretty quickly."
