April 6, 2010 - PRLog -- A media report says that the Pentagon wants US influence to ease India-Pakistan tensions but the US State Department is resisting any such US intervention. Listening to the Pentagon may be a good idea for many reasons. As the regional hegemon and budding world power India simply needs to have the confidence and magnanimity to act its size. As the upper riparian with a raft of hydro-electric projects in the pipe line it needs to reassure Pakistan that it will so time its storage that Pakistan’s needs are always met---India did the opposite in the Baghlihar Dam.

This would avert what is now being called a looming water war. Similar understandings could come about in Afghanistan to avert a proxy war there-- and on the joint war against extremism and terror and on the dialogue process between the two countries. Having gone through a conflict (Kargil), sub conventional experiments in disputed Kashmir and two major and several minor non-state actor sponsored terrorist attacks India and Pakistan should understand the consequences of strategies that have escalation built into them. This should be seen in the context of their nuclear weapon capability and the growing conventional imbalance in India’s favor. The US can and should play a positive role given its clout in both countries.
