March 31, 2010 - PRLog -- In a highlighted story on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday's broadcast on March 28, 2010, host Liane Hansen interviewed 4th grade award-winning film critic Perry Chen from San Diego. Liane asked Perry about his review of the new DreamWorks animation "How to Train Your Dragon" and played clips of Perry's press junket interview of America Ferrera, who voiced Astrid in the film.  Liane also asked Perry what he looks for when reviewing movies, and why he enjoys going to a movie theater more than watching a movie on DVD at home.

The interview titled "10-Year-Old Movie Critic Perry Chen Becomes a Star Himself" was an instant hit with listeners worldwide, nearly causing a server crash on Perry's website http://www.perryspreviews.com due to instant massive traffic directed from NPR.  Perry enjoyed listening to the show live at 8:40 am PST in his San Diego home with his family, soon after he received a call from GoDaddy, his Perry's Previews website hosting company.  He was told that his website has to be moved to another server to accommodate the onslaught of massive traffic.

"This is incredible!  We have never had this happen on my website before," said Perry, "People do listen and respond to interesting stories on NPR.  My parents and I are deeply touched by the warm support of our friends, old and new, who shared their experiences and thoughts about children's education and the importance of hearing voices from children."  As of March 30, there are 17 comments posted in response to the NPR story on the NPR website.  Perry also received many direct messages through his website, friend requests on Facebook, new Twitter followers, and subscribers to his YouTube Channel.

"We have just updated my website with new features that allow visitors to share my home page and their favorite posts with friends on many social media websites.  I would love to connect with new friends using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, and YouTube.  I have a few exciting projects in the works now, which give me opportunities to go beyond movie reviews," said Perry, "I look forward to sharing these with my friends and fans in the near future!"

National Public Radio has over 30 million listeners worldwide.  One of the most popular NPR programs, Weekend Edition Sunday is heard on nearly 600 NPR stations across the United States, and around the globe on NPR Worldwide.

From NPR website: 10-Year-Old Movie Critic Perry Chen Becomes a Star Himself

Ten-year-old Perry Chen of San Diego is making a name for himself as a film critic with his Web site, PerrysPreviews.com.

The precocious youngster recently gave DreamWorks' new animated film, How to Train Your Dragon, 4.5 starfish out of 5, calling it "perrific" — a word he coined by combining his name with "terrific."

Perry tells NPR's Liane Hansen he uses starfish to rate movies instead of stars to be more "kid-friendly."

"Because I'm a kid, actually."

On March 26, 2010, Perry also became Animation World Network’s (AWN.com) youngest blogger to provide a child movie-watcher’s unique perspective on animation and visual effects-driven films on http://www.AWN.com. Perry’s first blog, features his review of DreamWorks “How to Train Your Dragon” on its opening day:

“Perry will provide Animation World with the unique perspective of a 10-year-old boy who at an early age developed a love and appreciation of cinema well beyond his years.  He represents an audience every studio strives to reach.  What better way to gain insights into that audience than have Perry blog about the latest animated and visual effects-driven feature films. We are thrilled to have Perry review films for us,” remarked Dan Sarto, co-founder and publisher of Animation World Network.

About Perry Chen:
Perry Chen started writing movie reviews of G and PG-rated films from a child's perspective in November 2008, when he was an 8-year-old third grader at the San Diego Del Mar Union School district’s Torrey Hills School.  He has published over 20 movie reviews and film festival news as a film critic and columnist on nine San Diego newspapers.  He is the host of “Perry Previews the Movies” on wsRadio, the worldwide leader in internet talk radio.  Perry reviews movies on several local television stations regularly, including KUSI, Fox 5, CW Channel 6, and was a guest on other radio talk shows.  Perry won an “Excellent Writer Award” given by “We Chinese in America” newspaper and magazine on January 17, 2010 for his movie review column.

Perry correctly predicted that “Up” would win the best animation film at the Golden Globe, Annie, and Oscars in 2010.
