GR Civic Theatre Seeks Talent for 2010 Summer Repertory Theatre

The Summer Repertory Theatre (SRT) produces two shows suitable for the whole family every summer. These shows are presented “in rep” (i.e. on alternate evenings) in July and August. The SRT program is designed for participants aged 14-19 with some previous theater training. This is a college-level program and is supervised by theater professionals. Those selected from the city-wide talent search are responsible for all aspects of the production from constructing sets and costumes, working on lights; and, even the show promotion which includes the selling of playbill ads. Each person performs in one show ands then works backstage on the other show, providing a complete theater experience. Expectations are set very high as the show’s quality must meet the professional standards set by Civic Theatre.

2010 Summer Repertory Theatre includes:
Pirates of Penzance Jr.
Performances Friday July 30, Sunday August 1, Thursday August 5, Saturday August 7
Book and lyrics by Sir William Shwenck Gilbert, Music by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan

Wacky, irreverent and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE JR. spins a hilarious farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyes daughters and an eccentric Major-General, all morally bound to the often ridiculous dictates of honor and duty.

The BFG (The Big Friendly Giant)
Performances Saturday July 31, Wednesday August 4, Friday August 6, Sunday August 8
By David Wood, based on the book by Roald Dahl

Evidently not even Roald Dahl could resist the acronym craze of the early eighties. BFG? Bellowing Ferret-faced Golfer? Bumbling Fairy Godmother? Ah…Big Friendly Giant!
One of Dahl’s most lovable character creations, audiences are sure to be delighted as they follow this BFG and his small friend Sophie through their adventures. Whether galloping off with Sophie nestled in the soft skin of his ear to capture dreams as though they were exotic butterflies; speaking his delightful jumbled, squib-fangled dialect; or whizzpopping for the Queen, the BFG leaves an unforgettable impression of bigheartedness.
