By: Jennifer Prater GR Civic Theatre DOUBT, A PARABLE Drama : June 4 - 13 By John Patrick Shanley; 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, Grand Rapids, Michigan April 30, 2010 – Written by John Patrick Shanley and set at a St. Nicholas Church School in 1964, Doubt centers around the tense and tumultuous relationship between Sister Aloysius, principal of the school, and Father Flynn, the residing priest. When Sister Aloysius confronts Father Flynn of potential sexual misconduct with a new student, Father Flynn denies the charges and even gives a homily about the dangers of gossip. The constant tension and suspense lead to quick-fire dialogue that tackles themes such as religion, morality and authority. Having won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2005 and produced as a feature film in 2008, Doubt, A Parable is sure to leave audiences suspicious of their own doubts. Says Shanley, a cradle Catholic himself, “the title ‘Doubt’ really had the power for me, not the Catholic Church scandals.” Directed by guest, Paul Dreher, who was Grand Rapids Civic Theatre’s artistic director from 1960 until 1999, the show will take place from June 4th until June 13th at GRCT Meijer Majestic Theatre. Dreher, who has directed over 230 productions, acted in over 80 productions and done lighting for over 220 productions is sure to bring a unique and powerful direction to the show.
