March 18, 2010 - PRLog -- PRISMA is a Peruvian non-governmental organization that has played a major role in the fight against food insecurity over the past twenty years in the country. It currently has a national staff of over 460, located throughout its Lima-based central office and 40 offices at regional and local levels throughout the poorer departments since we work both with authorities at regional and local levels and with families, credit clients and producers at community level.

PRISMA has significant experience in the areas of research, health and nutrition, microcredit, agricultural development, local government capacity building and environmental health. We are also strong in logistics, especially for drugs and medical equipment and education.

PRIMSA works all over Peru, in almost every department, so the communities served varies widely by region. In Lima, there is a strong focus on tuberculosis patients of all ages, children in the shanty town of Juan Pablo II in Los Olivos, and members of the community in San Juan de Miraflores.

This placement needs volunteer as project is a coalition of PRISMA, ADRA and UPCH with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It aims to improve the opportunities for integration into the labor market of patients and families affected by tuberculosis and enhanced awareness of their rights to fight poverty and thereby facilitate the control of tuberculosis in Ventanilla.

PRISMA is in charge of the job training of patients and families, while providing microloans from a special fund; ADRA assumes the advocacy component of human rights; and UPCH is in charge of diagnostic support for detection of tuberculosis. This period has shaped the field equipment and basic studies for the design of educational interventions and rights in the target population.

Volunteers can assist by doing the following tasks :
Volunteers will be helping conduct research on tuberculosis testing, specifically MODS. The current tests most commonly used are very slow to determine results, and as a result PRIMSA is working to develop faster methods to test for TB, which would mean that patients can start receiving treatment much more quickly.

Volunteers with the following specific skills are preferred for this placement:
Doctor
Nurse
Medical Student
Pre-Med Student
Health & Hygiene Training
HIV/AIDS Awareness Training
Medical Administration
