March 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Sleep Apnea Dentist Dr. Terry Forsberg wants his patients and Greater Monterey neighbors to better understand dangers of snoring. While heavy snoring can be an annoyance, it may also be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a serious condition where an individual briefly stops breathing during the night, increasing the risk of heart failure and strokes.

People who snore don’t always stop breathing, but there are chemicals in the brain that should trigger breathing that are not stimulated when a person snores. Without the stimulation the person will often stop breathing. When a person stops breathing at night, oxygen levels drop dramatically and hormones and adrenaline surge. Those hormones contribute to high blood pressure, irregularities of the heart and can trigger heart attacks

Terry Forsberg, D.D.S. uses a variety of oral appliances that are custom-fitted to help each patient sleep soundly and minimize the effects of Sleep Apnea, such as snoring. These FDA-approved devices essentially treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea by preventing airway obstruction and allowing the patient to breathe easily and continuously.

Studies have shown a connection between snoring and cardiovascular problems, however men made up most of the study group. According to a large study published in the February 2000 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, women who snore regularly have about twice the risk of heart attacks and strokes than women who never snore.

If you snore loudly, wake without feeling rested or have hypertension, diabetes or are overweight, you may be at risk of a sleep disordered breathing condition or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). To learn more about OSA go to http://www.Montereybay.IHateCPAP.com.

Dr. Forsberg received his training in sleep apnea at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced dental studies (LVI) from Dr. Kent Smith, the co-founder and the co-director for the Dental Organization for Sleep Apnea.  Dr. Forsberg focuses on oral appliances for adults and preventative treatment for children, and screens patients for obstructive sleep apnea.
