Things for the Civic could be better for the couple of years. As Charmley noted, the manufacturers prefer to apply an important update of its hybrid powertrain to one model at a time (in the Honda case, this is for the Insight 2010) and then move out the learned lessons to other hybrids. Although for years the compact category had led for its fuel economy, the Civic Hybrid expects a redesign.

The reign of the Prius could end next year if GM keeps his promise and launches the electric Volt with its expected 230 mpg. Hyundai went back into the ring last year and has remained the top of the positions in 2010, surpassing the 4-door with manual transmission from Accord by a whisker. The Sonata register 22 MPG city and 32 highway compared to 22/31 mpg from the Accord. What traditionally was a head to head race, could shortly become in beating if Hyundai Sonata get achieve its hybrid-powered lithium-ion batteries for motor shows before October 2010.
