March 3, 2010 - PRLog -- New York, New York (March 3, 2010), Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture and Areytos Performance Works (APW) present Herenecia Cubana: Bembé Salón y Calle, a dynamic evening of dance, live music and visual art featuring Afro-Cuban Orishas, Rumba, Salsa, Cha-cha-cha and contemporary dance theater. The one night only performance will be held on Friday, March 19, 2009 in the Repertory Theatre at the Hostos Community College located at 450 Grand Concourse Ave, Bronx, NY at 7:30pm.

Areytos Performance Works is a dance theatre company that seamlessly intersects the worlds of performance art, Afro-Caribbean and Contemporary modern dance. The word Areytos is a variation of on the Taino/Arawak word areitos, a days long community ritual gathering that includes dance, music and art. Under the artistic direction of celebrated choreographer Sita Frederick and executive production by advocate, educator and dancer Leticia Peguero, Bembé Salón y Calle, provides a seamless integration of ritual Cuban dance with professional Latin and Caribbean street techniques. “I am thrilled that Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture is helping us share our artistic and spiritual inspirations with new audiences”, explains Sita Frederick, Co-Founder/Artistic Director of Areytos Performance Works.

The evening creatively celebrates the legacy of Cuban dance and music by integrating tradition and innovation and highlights the culture’s impact in present day New York City. Among the evening’s special performances include: live musical stage jam sessions by renowned Cuban-born, Grammy-nominated master percussionists Pedrito Martínez and Román Díaz, along with the legendary multi-instrumentalist Onel Mulet, who is noted for his performances with Johnny Pacheco, José Luis Rodríguez “El Puma” and Celia Cruz, among others; New group works created by guest choreographers Rebecca Bliss and Mad Hat Ballroom’s Rodney López, seamlessly blend folkloric, Afro-Cuban and contemporary dance techniques that examine the joys and complications of human, social and political relationships. Encapsulating the evening’s spirit, Carlos Mateu and José Ortiz, offer visual representations of the legacy and heritage of Cuban music and dance.
