American Teacher Mary Hagan Will Be Given TRAILBLAZER Award.

Mrs. Mary Hagan, the 6th Grade Elementary teacher that inspired unique courage in a class of young students in 1971 that included Tampa's Super Bowl Champion Tyrone Keys, will be honored Saturday, February 27, 2010.

Feb. 26, 2010 - PRLog -- Mrs. Hagan's work as a young teacher was most recently recognized last year by one of her young students from a class she taught in the south during a unique time in history.  Below is the audio of a television broadcast, recorded by one of Mrs. Hagan's students when she was a sixth grade elementary teacher in 1971 at Dawson Elementary in Jackson, Mississippi. Tyrone Keys, 1985 Bears Super Bowl Champion, was one of those students in her sixth grade class.

At the time, racial strife was unfolding in the South. As a white teacher in a predominately black school, she was asked to give up her position as his elementary teacher. By seeing no color lines herself, she taught her students one of the greatest lessons of love.

Last year, when Tyrone and an All Sports board member contacted a private investigator to locate her so that they could thank her, she was overwhelmed. She had no idea of the impression she made on these young students— what true character looked like in the face of adversity.

He and two of his classmates took a walk down memory lane last year and traveled with her to the actual classroom where she taught them.  To their astonishment, she pulled the decades-old class roll from that year from her purse.

Tyrone continued to thank Mary Hagan by bringing her to Tampa last year to show her what he has accomplished with the inspiration he acquired from her courage.

It has renewed Mrs. Hagan's unique and unsung hero spirit as a teacher in America. Not that she ever really lost her spirit, but she is grateful that students not only remembered her, but that they learned such an important lesson.

Tyrone Keys is the fruition of her character and her legacy lives in the spirit of what is All Sports Community Service. Fittingly, Tyrone won the SEC's Student of Character Award last year.   Last year, Tyrone Keys was also inducted into the Mississippi State Sports Hall of Fame. His special guest was Mary Hagan.
