Skaters, Get Ready to Roll!2010 NROC season opens Saturday in Los Alamitos, CA
By: InlinePlanet.com Skaters glide over a 10-kilometer course on the runways of the Joint Forces Training Base. The smooth, flat pavement and relatively short distance make for a blistering pace. Last year's winner, Brian Talley of Corona, finished the race in 16 minutes and 51 seconds. His average speed was 22.1 mph. The women's winner, Peggy Girgenti of Anaheim, was just 50 seconds back. About 100 skaters are expected to line up for Saturday's race, which starts at 8:25 a.m. The race draws the area's top inline speed skaters, including members of Team Safe and the California Heat. It also attracts dozens of casual skaters who enjoy the unique scenery offered by the helicopter-lined air base. Registration is $42. Spectators are welcome. Valid ID (driver's license, identification card or passport) is required to enter the base. Aside from the inline 10K, Race on the Base includes runs, walks and a reverse triathlon. Proceeds go to support the USA Water Polo National Training Center at the Joint Forces Training Base. The National Roller Cup is a series of inline skate races throughout North America. The series includes 19 races this year. The largest event is the NorthShore Inline Marathon, which draws about 3,500 skaters a year to Duluth, MN. The series concludes Sept. 25th with the New York 100K and Skate Marathon.
