I was right on the cusp of righting an article about energy shots and what is really in them when I came across something much more exciting than the known dangers of energy shots.

How about a product that could save our country billions of dollar per year in healthcare? How about a product that could save up to 500,000 American lives per year? How about a product that could save consumers billions of dollars? How about a product that could help addicting users kick one of the most addictive substances in the history of mankind? How about a product that could potentially prevent fires? How about a product that could cut litter dramatically throughout the country?

Now how about if I tell you that a federal agency is doing everything in its power to prevent the spread of this product? The product is the electronic cigarette and the agency is the FDA.

Of course, the FDA is responsible for assuring consumer safety so expecting standards from a new industry seems to make sense. Although, after beginning to write a piece of energy drinks, it seems counterintuitive that the FDA would be concerning itself with nicotine. Most consumers buy electronic cigarettes at mall kiosks or online and the cost ranges from as cheap as $20 to as much as $200.

The product has nicotine, but doesn’t contain tobacco. It consists of a battery powered device which connects to a cartridge containing liquid nicotine. The liquid is heated up through an atomizing device triggered by the user inhaling, creating a vapor which the user inhales. The hope is that this product can actually help smokers quit smoking, and there is much evidence that electronic cigarettes have done just that.
With the amount of money spent on healthcare costs and the number of deaths attributed to tobacco, one would like to think that the government would welcome this industry with open arms. The hope is that after the FDA determines how to categorize the product that the government will do just that. Their current stance is that it is a new drug, but that is unlikely to stand up to much scrutiny, leaving the FDA with a decision to make regarding regulating the product.

When I first saw the product I was totally taken back. I was introduced to it through a friend and new that this was something worthy of writing an article about. The vast majority of the companies in the industry are just small businesses made up of hungry entrepreneurs. Given the current employment situation in the USA, it destroying an industry like this seems somewhat counterintuitive to the American ideal of capitalism.

Like many who buy electronic cigarettes online I was quite satisfied with the product. Electronic cigarettes definitely hold a huge amount of potential for many people addicted to nicotine. Any alternative delivery devices for nicotine seems like it must be a good thing, but one that allows a smoker to continue “smoking” has to be a winner.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the courts and in the legislature, but it would be difficult to think of a way in which limiting access to this product could possibly be helpful to Americans. The problem is that there is a very strong “anti everything related to tobacco in anyway whatsoever lobby” and a very strong tobacco lobby, and both of these groups are steadfastly opposed to e-cigs.

This competition has gotten the industry off to a rough start, but it appears as though many businesses are thriving and hopefully common sense will win out, and the real winner in all of this will be the smoker who just can’t quit using the patch or chewing the gum or popping the pill.
