| ![]() Recent Study Links Pomegranates with Increased Breast HealthUS researchers found that pomegranates contain six natural compounds that may prevent the growth of hormone-dependent breast cancer by blocking the enzyme aromatase, which changes androgen to estrogen.
By: La Ishá Inc. Denver skincare entrepreneur Sharon Gnatt Epel, has touted the remarkable benefits of pomegranates for years with her organic anti-aging pomegranate- "One of our most exciting products is Breast SOS, the first all-natural, synthetic-free topical skincare formulation based on pomegranate research and designed to support the beauty and health of the breast and décolleté areas," said Epel. "Breast SOS can also be used as an effective tool to make breast self-examination efficient, easy and pleasurable...its' luxurious aroma and feel invites nightly application, which allows women to familiarize themselves with their bodies in a way that monthly checks cannot adequately accomplish. Many of our clients have used Breast SOS after breast surgery and in preparation of breast reconstruction to facilitate healing. The all-natural, medical-grade essential oils condition and nourish the skin, making the stretching process easy and pain-free." The active ingredients in Breast SOS have benefits that are documented by a wide variety of scientific research, including the study referenced here. Epel noted that, "While these studies are further examples of cutting edge scientific developments in women's health care, La Ishá skin care products are not intended to be substitutes for medical care women with cancer are receiving and are not drugs. We do however, believe in the health benefits of pomegranates and hold out hope that science will continue to discover links to this incredible fruit and cancer prevention in women." The study, which was published in the January issue of Cancer Prevention Research, is the work of Dr. Shiuan Chen, director of the Division of Tumor Cell Biology at the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope, Duarte, California and colleagues also from City of Hope and the Center for Human Nutrition at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles. For the study, the researchers screened ten compounds in a group known as ellagitannins. Chen and his team found that the compound with the strongest impact was urolithin B (UB), which appeared to inhibit multiple estrogen-producing mechanisms that fuel the growth of breast cancer. They also found that UB prevented estrogen-responsive breast cancer cells from multiplying. "By suppressing the production of estrogen, urolithin B and other phytochemicals found in pomegranates can prevent hormone-responsive breast cancer tumors from growing," stated Chen.
