Follow on Google News | Growth and Demand, but a lack of skills in Ceará?Its today reported that in the next 6 years there is a need for 166 thousand skilled workers in the state of Ceará.
By: Jamie MacDonald-Murray With the economy anticipated to grow in Brazil by 5-6% in 2010, the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016 Brazil is on the up, and Ceará is certainly part of that with booming Tourism, Industry and Service sectors. Senai-CE (National Industrial Training) says that there is a shortage in many areas for skilled workers and with the fast pass of the growth the gap is getting wider. "This is a colossal challenge for the education system in general, and particularly for the schools of higher education. In spite of the recognized advancements of these institutions, the qualitative discrepancy is still enormous" FEA/USP, José Pastore. To counter this huge deficit Senai is investing R$50 million in increasing training in 2010 alone and working with other Educational bodies to increase training and placements in Schools to close the gap. Another example can be found n the port of Pecem, 40 kilometers from Caucaia. Pecem is now the largest exporter of fruit from Brazil, during 2009 Pecem exported 261,228 tones of fruit which is 37% of the total fruit exports from Brazil. Its way ahead of its nearest rival, Santos Port, which accounts for 13%. But in contrast its reported than even though for 6 years Pecem has been increasing exports by 100% per year the number of Fiscal staff has declined from 12 to 4. This is now creating delays in exports and has attracted urgent attention from Cid Gomes, the state Governor, to address the situation. With such strong growth and huge potential the last thing Ceara needs is to be let down by a lack of qualified staff. Eveline Barbosa director of Ipece gives her expert view that Ceará is well placed to grow and expand and will cope with the need to train the many more skilled workers, as the state has been and is still investing heavily to do so.
