The Clipper race fleet consists of ten identical 68 foot racing yachts, each sponsored by cities or countries. They had a spectacular send off on the Humber in September, a brief stop in La Rochelle on to Rio de Janiero and then next sailed to Cape Town for the start of the fourth leg. Gusty gale force winds led to drama on the start line in Cape Town: a collision between ‘Cork’ and ‘Hull & Humber’ left both teams needing significant repairs. The rest of the fleet headed east into the Southern Ocean where gale force winds, whale strikes and spinnaker wraps kept the pressure on the non-professional teams. Team ‘Finland’ currently tops the leader board ahead of ‘Spirit of Australia’ and ‘Cork’ in this globally unique yacht race. With speeds of up to 24 knots registered as the fleet surfed east, the crews were in Western Australia in plenty of time for Christmas. Yes! That’s right… After the Clipper fleet returns from their ten month circumnavigation they will be available for corporate and private charters.
