Dec. 17, 2009 - PRLog -- Cold Control, the air conditioning and refrigeration specialists, were awarded the preferred contractor to replace the 25-year-old air conditioning system at the uniquely versatile Roadhouse nightclub in Covent Garden, London.

Cold Control’s remit was to calculate the required cooling load and provide a solution to upgrade the comfort cooling inside the nightclub. The original cooling consisted of seven Mitsubishi Electric 12kW systems with a concealed type ducted system suspended from the ceiling and discharging air via sporadic linear grilles. At times of high occupancy the cooling provided was insufficient and customers were uncomfortable due to the high temperatures.

Cold Control specified and installed nine 25kw Daikin split and twin systems to maintain and bring the ultimate climate controlled comfort to the basement club. The concealed units chosen were unobtrusive, quiet whilst in operation and blended in with the interior décor, whilst allowing even temperature distribution in large and heavily occupied spaces.

Cold Control identified the ideal requirements and design for an efficient running system. They recommended allowing the user more control by bringing units online as and when required. The cooling requirements were calculated with a 40kW allowance for lighting and 110kW for occupants and other heat sources within the club. The existing cooling provided a total of 84kW with only approximately 55kW useful. It was essential that Cold Control specified and supplied a sufficient cooling system that would benefit both the nightclub and its customers. This was achieved through the selected positioning of the indoor handling units to provide a uniform temperature throughout the club.

Before the refit could begin Cold Control were required to clear the roof and dispose safely of the old units to allow for the new models to be installed. It was integral that the design allowed for a severely restricted space for outdoor units. With the Daikin twin-split systems it allows a maximum of two indoor units on one outdoor condenser unit to ensure minimal cooling loss in case of a system failure, whilst ensuring a more even air distribution in a larger area.

Due to the complex nature of this project, Cold Control project managed the installation from start to finish. They made certain that the existing cooling was left on-line whilst the new works were taking place and that road closures were safely put in place to utilise a crane to safely lift the new outdoor units onto the rooftop. This took place in the early hours of the morning to ensure minimal disruption to the public.

Cold Control successfully completed all the work to the design specification and commissioned the site on time following a seven-week work schedule. All work was carried out between 7.00am and 16.00pm ensuring a clear site every day prior to opening times allowing for no disruption to the business continuity. Furthermore the company were able to propose a more efficient cooling system that did not exceed the original footprint size.

Mark Grant, Managing Director of Cold Control comments, “ Cold Control were able to offer the Roadhouse a turnkey package, which incorporated the latest technology whilst adhering to all the latest Government Legislations of refrigerants. Making the Roadhouse again, the coolest club in town”.
