German World War II Survivor Reveals the Perils of Life under the Nazis

New book provides rare first-hand glimpse of ordinary Germans’ lives as the Third Reich failed

Dec. 9, 2009 - PRLog -- In her just-published autobiographical novel Journey to Peace, German-born Canadian Ruth Rathgeber draws on her real-life experience to create a riveting saga of fear, love and betrayal under the Nazi regime. The book opens as the Third Reich is crumbling and Karin von Holbig, a young German working as a reporter in occupied Poland prepares to flee the Russian advance. The story traces Karin’s gruelling and life-threatening journey from Poland to Germany and eventually to Canada in search of a life without war.
Rathgeber is available for interviews and would welcome the opportunity to talk about her book and discuss what life was really like for ordinary Germans trapped under Hitler’s insane regime. At the book launch for Journey to Peace, she read from the novel and recounted her vivid memories of the perilous existence of ordinary Germans during and immediately after World War II. She also answered the many questions of audience members curious to better understand this devastating time in modern history.
