Veteran’s memoir features humor and cooking tips
VISALIA, CA – In his memoir and cookbook, Dining with Dub (published by iUniverse) author William A. “Dub” Franklin shares anecdotes from his past and recipes from his private collection of tried and true dishes.

Born at the start of the Great Depression and a veteran of the Korean War, Franklin has seen enough to know that “life can be funny,” and “life can be serious.” In one of his 16 short chapters, he recalls how he met his wife while on a blind date – with someone else.

“Meeting Helen for the first time was an experience you only have once and then you never forget it,” he writes. “Helen was walking toward the car I was sitting in. When I looked back at her I realized that I was already in love with her and always had been.” When one of the girls in the car commented that Helen had one of the new “poodle” haircuts, Franklin asked, “Can I run my fingers through your poodle?” and Helen smartly shot back at him to ask the woman with whom he was on a date for permission.

His narrative of his family’s tradition of Chinese dinners on Easter Sunday is accompanied by instructions for a simple sweet and sour pork dish, and another chapter features a savory recipe for lima beans and ham hocks.

Franklin describes his book’s tone as “homey,” noting that his writing style is as casual as his speech. Dining with Dub is a book for family’s to share, and will appeal to members of the greatest generation as well as up-and-coming foodies
