Nov. 27, 2009 - PRLog -- With winter fast approaching Nowinnofee.co.uk, the UK’s first independent resource website for people looking to pursue compensation claims, has launched its Look Before You Slip campaign to help people avoid nasty accidents while out and about this season.

Tom Johnson, founder of Nowinnofee.co.uk said: “With the weather getting worse, roads and pavements are already becoming a hazard for pedestrians. Wet leaves, frosty ground and especially snow and ice all present a danger and it is crucial that people take precautions if they are to avoid injury this winter.

“We hope that our Look Before You Slip campaign will increase risk awareness and help decrease the number of trips and falls this season.”

Plan Ahead
When the weather is treacherous you need to plan your journeys with care. If you can avoid going out or re-schedule your trip then do so. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and if blizzards and gales are heading your way, make your journey before the weather reaches you.

Dress for the Occasion
If you do have to venture out in bad weather, make sure that you wear appropriate footwear. Shoes and boots with rubber soles will provide proper traction on snow and ice whereas plastic or leather soles can become slippery and dangerous.

Walk the Walk
Walk slowly and never run on icy ground. Keep both hands free for balance, rather than in your pockets and take short steps or shuffle for stability. Walk flat-footed with your centre of gravity directly over your feet as much as possible and use handrails wherever available.

On Your Way
Give yourself sufficient time and plan your route carefully ensuring that you stick to main roads where the pavements are more likely to have been cleared of ice. Avoid shortcuts and smaller streets that may be completely covered in snow and think about what the snow could be hiding – kerbstones, grids and hidden litter can all pose a threat.

Worst Case Scenario
If the worst does happen, be prepared to fall. Bend your back and head forward so you won't bang your head on the ground and try to roll with the fall twisting and rolling backwards, rather than falling forward. Relax as much as possible and if you are carrying bags or boxes with you throw them away from yourself - protect yourself and not of the objects you are carrying.
