Music of the Carolinas Concert to Benefit Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina

Nov. 18, 2009 - PRLog -- Raleigh, N.C. - PineCone teams up with the NC Museum of History to support the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina with the next free concert in the Music of the Carolinas series.

Featuring strong harmony vocals and a range of instruments, including fiddle, viola, English concertina, bowed dulcimer, acoustic bass, guitar, bouzouki, piano, trombone, recorder, bandura, zither, and more, Mappamundi performs acoustic world music from places ranging from Eastern and Western Europe, the British Isles, Colonial America, and recently, Latin America.

Mappamundi was formed in 1994 and has played concerts, festivals, arts councils, schools, weddings and more ever since. The band is: Beth Holmgren (vocals, percussion, piano); Jim Baird (guitar, acoustic bass, trombone, vocals); Ken Bloom (guitar, bandura, bowed dulcimer, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, recorder, Irish flute, vocals and much more); Jane Peppler (vocals, fiddle, viola, concertina, piano).

This concert is part of the Music of the Carolinas series, a free series that PineCone presents in partnership with the NC Museum of History.

In the midst of North Carolina's state budget woes, the North Carolina Museum of History committed to maintaining the Music of the Carolinas series, which it has been presenting for more than a decade in partnership with PineCone - the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music. The series includes nine free programs, one per month, from October through June.

"We are very fortunate to have the support of the local communities to help the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina serve the folks we do in our 34 county service area. As the holidays are always a time that we see an increase in need for many reasons; kids are out of school and not receiving free or reduced lunch, families like to be able to prepare a holiday meal and do not have the means, and now due to economic times especially, we are seeing an increase of anywhere between 30-60% depending on the county in which some folks live.

We are grateful that individuals, faith based organizations, school children, our corporate sponsors, and small businesses are hearing the call for the need and helping us reach our goals. Currently we serve nearly 486,000 people through our network of 800 partner agencies, with 33% of those being under the age of 18. Holiday food drives are a vital part of what we do to help bring some holiday spirit to those who need our help," says Lee Cheney, the Food Drive and Special Event Manager for the Food Bank CENC.

The Music of the Carolinas series invites people to discover and celebrate North Carolina's rich musical heritage by featuring the best home-grown North Carolina traditional artists, as well as by showcasing the musical and performance traditions of the various cultures that call North Carolina home today.

The concert is free and open to the public, though concert-goers are being asked to donate what they can for the food drive. Program notes will be provided.
