FreeGreen Launches Groundbreaking Home Design Contest

FreeGreen launches its new home design contest called Who's Next. This groundbreaking effort turns the design contest world on its head by allowing entrants to promote themselves and their firms to the public.

Nov. 11, 2009 - PRLog -- FreeGreen.com, the world’s leading provider of house plans has announced the launch of their new home design contest. This unique competition allows entrants to promote themselves through their contest entries.  Entrants will be allowed to upload pictures or logos, list their contact information, websites, Twitter & Facebook accounts, and more.  Public viewers of the contest site will be encouraged to reach out to entrants and interact with them.  As David Wax, FreeGreen Co-Founders states, "We were tired of seeing design competitions where talented designers were hidden behind some registration number.  We wanted to create an environment where the designers could interact with, and promote themselves to our contest viewing audience. In this way contest entrants are not only vying for a price, but also using the contest as a marketing platform."

Also, unique to this endeavor are the contest's prizes. First prize receives a typical cash prize of $5,000, but the top three finishers will also gain the right to have FreeGreen turn their designs into full house plans. Entrants will then retain the rights to these house plans, and FreeGreen will place each house plan for sale on FreeGreen's Open Source house plan sales site.

Competitors are asked to design for one of two demographic profiles. The first profile, called The Starter House, is based on a couple moving from their urban loft apartment to a suburban home in which they intend to start a family. The second profile, called The Not So Empty Nest, is based on a retiring couple looking to downsize their home, and begin a life of active retirement. Entrants are asked to choose one of these two profiles and to explain their design concepts in only 9 images, which will be shown on the contest viewing, and voting site.

Judging will be completed through multiple rounds, with public voting counting for 50% of all judging scores. The other 50% of the judging scores will be conducted by a jury consisting of FreeGreen design staff. There is a $50 entry fee, and the competition is open to designers from all locations, and of all experience levels. Registration ends on December 31st, 2009, and public voting begins on March 2nd, 2010.

As Dave Wax states, "What we have created is a design contest by designers, and for designers. There are many crowdsourcing initiatives going on today, but many of them take advantage, and truly abuse the design community. Our contest celebrates our design entrants and tries to help them find work. Who's Next is easy, affordable, and useful. We look forward to this competition and many more in the future.”
