By: Susan W. Morgan Camp owners and Top Dogs, David Oberman and Kathy Fiume, designed their 6,100 square-foot, state-of-the- Whether three-blocks or three continents away, interested doggy parents can look in on their favorite hound by logging on to the Camp’s website to view the real-time footage broadcast by the many Camper Cams® mounted throughout the play yards. Inside the log cabin-style lobby, there’s a retail shop featuring natural dog food and supplements, toys, treats and trinkets. Camp Bow Wow® Rockland will also partner with the Hi-Tor Animal Shelter to foster homeless dogs and look for families willing to offer them a new leash on life. “The health and safety of our campers is our first priority,” said Oberman. ”It’s not healthy for dogs to lay around the house all day with nothing to do or anyone to engage them. They need a way to channel their energy: to be mentally and physically challenged. That’s why, when they’re left at home alone, they often develop behavioral issues as a way of coping with the situation. Dogs are pack animals just like we are, so socialization is very important to their wellbeing. Every dog is an individual with individual needs. Some do well in a group environment right away, while others are more hesitant to get involved. That’s why our complimentary interview day is so important, it gives each Camper the opportunity to get to know our Counselors, the Camp and the other dogs at their own pace.” “After a full or half day of play, our day campers are happy and ready to head home to relax with their families,” said Fiume. “Our overnight campers have been so busy all day that they’re ready to retire to one of our 40 spacious, private, climate-controlled cabins for dinner and a rest. Most of them are so tired and happy, they don’t focus on missing their family.” All cabins are furnished with comfy cots, soft fleece blankets and are large enough to accommodate two or three dogs from the same family if their guardian would like them to stay together. The dogs also enjoy special Campfire Treats before bedtime. To avoid upset stomachs, parents of overnight campers are encouraged to bring their dog’s food from home. Half-day, and full-day play options are available in addition to overnight camp. Camp Bow Wow’s fees are all inclusive; overnight rates include all day fun. Special requests such as administering medication (not injections) or extra treats will be honored at no extra charge. All campers at Camp Bow Wow are supervised by a staff of Certified Camp Counselors® trained in pet CPR, first aid, dog behavior, group play dynamics, safety/health management and, of course, cleaning procedures. The camp will be staffed with 1 counselor for every 15 campers at all times. For the safety and security of all campers, new arrivals are required to participate in a free Interview day, before they can attend camp on a regular basis. Canine campers must be on flea and tick preventative; Oberman, a devout dog lover, had ambitions to be a veterinarian when he was young. After a rewarding career as a personal trainer and health consultant, he decided to direct his expertise towards helping dogs. He and Fiume struggled for years to figure out what to do with their dogs while they were working. They read an article about the Camp Bow Wow in Bergen County, NJ, took the tour and found what they were looking for. Said Fiume, “You know it’s a great place, when your dogs are so excited about going, they can’t wait to get out of the car and inside with their friends.” Two of their sons, Hunter Fiume and Shane Oberman, will be the Head Counselors at Camp.
