Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Meliá Kuala Lumpur, a four-star hotel located in Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle, invites guests to experience the eagerly anticipated Chinese New Year on 14 February 2010.

One of the most awaited events in Malaysia, the Chinese New Year is celebrated over a 15-day period, the main celebration happening during the first three days. In 2010, the Year of the Tiger commences on 14 February, marking the start of the New Year.  Homes will be decorated with red items such as red lanterns and the Chinese will wear red traditional costumes. Firecrackers will also be set off at midnight on the eve of the Chinese New Year, stemming from myth that it drives away bad spirits. Another belief is that according to Chinese folklore, fireworks were used to awaken a sleeping dragon that brought about rain for the abundance of crops in this agriculture-based society.

Travelers walking the streets of Malaysia will be dazzled by the festive decorations that adorn establishments and residential homes, and on the 15th day of the New Year, the Lantern Festival marks the end of the celebration. During the evening, there is a parade of people carrying lanterns, accompanied by young men performing the dragon dance. The dragon is made of silk paper, bamboo, and it spans longer than 100 feet in length. The impressive sight of the dragon in motion will make for a memorable vacation, and travelers may want to take photos of the event.
