By: Brad Lucas Downloader is a system to enable the monitoring and management of downloaded materials from your web site. Downloader sets up links which when clicked track the request and then serves the requested file back to the user. Notification of the request is sent you the administrator as well. A database manages the relationship between the download link and the file in storage. The storage system is the Amazon Simple Storage System (Amazon S3). "The reason we built Downloader in the first place was to manage the requests for our Open Source project. We didn't want to force people to register to get a copy, we just wanted to know if they downloaded one of our applications. Since we've been using S3 for all our backups as well as file storage is made sense to how the project downloads there as well.", said Brad Lucas, President of Beacon Hill, Inc. The complete system is downloadable and includes the full source code for inspection and customization. A run time is included in the download so the system can be tried without having to rebuild. Those users interested in building Downloader should be familar with Ant, Java and Spring.
