Oct. 27, 2009 - PRLog -- Juliet Stevenson, one of the UK's most prominent theatre, film and television actresses, is helping support women with one of the world’s rarest diseases.

Incurable lymphangioleiomyomatosis, known as LAM, affects only women, and causes progressive lung damage.

There are only around 120 LAM patients in the UK.

Award-winning Juliet, star of films including Truly, Madly, Deeply, Mona Lisa Smile, and Bend It Like Beckham, has become patron of the charity LAM Action.

The organisation funds vital research into the disease, and supports LAM patients and their families.

“Despite the fact LAM is incredibly rare the diagnosis is nonetheless just as devastating for patients and their families,” said Juliet, who has most recently appeared in Duet for One on the West End stage.

“LAM gradually destroys lung tissue until in the end stages of the disease patients are left fighting for breath.

“There is currently no cure for the condition and it is vital more research is done to help find an effective treatment.”

LAM Action helps support women like mother-of-one Clair Hemmington from Brentwood, Essex, who was diagnosed with LAM five years ago.

Prior to undergoing a life-saving double lung transplant in 2008 the 43-year-old was on oxygen 24-hours a day and deteriorating rapidly.

Essex-born Juliet met Clair on a recent trip to Colchester, where the actress received an honorary degree from the University of Essex.

“I was delighted to meet Clair and see her looking so well after all she’s been through.”

Mother of one Clair said: “Juliet’s agreeing to be a patron for LAM Action has been a real boost for the charity. Her support will make a real difference.

“Juliet is one of our best-loved actresses and I feel privileged to have had the chance to meet her, and tell her more about LAM.”
