oGorgeous Yoga Bags Are Answer for Naked Mats

The search for a functional and fashionable yoga mat bag.

Oct. 19, 2009 - PRLog -- As eager yoga students clamber to the 24 Hour Fitness Group X studio doors for their popular Tuesday evening session, they await anxiously with yoga mat in one arm and bag, water bottle, and towel in the other. The crowd consists mostly of women in stylish fitness frocks, but less than 10% have a carry-all yoga bag. What gives? Can oGorgeous cure the syndrome?

Fashion trends in the gym are short-lived and long-ridiculed. Remember those thong leotards over lycra shorts? Even though women have removed themselves from that late 80s fad, fashion is still an important factor in their active lifestyles. Women look put together with their cute camisoles and form fitting stretch capris, but what happened to finishing off the look with the perfect bag?

As the students filter into the mirrored studio, most throw their phone, towel, and water canister on the hardwood floor while rolling out their yoga mat. Rebecca Carlson, a regular of this 24 Hour Fitness yoga class explains why she has never invested in a mat bag. “I have looked into it. Don’t get me wrong. But either they’re too plain and sack-like or they look too much like their only purpose is to hold yoga mats.” When asked what her alternative was, she smiled, “My arm.”

oGorgeous, a San Francisco Bay Area based brand that just debuted their yoga bag collection may be able to ease the naked mat syndrome. Pilates instructor, Cassey Ho, was on the search for a fashionably functional bag after struggling to keep her mat and belongings together when traveling to and from different studios. “I too kept my mat under my arm and my hands were always full with little things. It wasn’t until the day that I couldn’t open the door to my own class that I knew there was a problem.” Consulting her students as a focus group, Ho pin-pointed what fashion-conscious Yogis and Pilates enthusiasts were looking for in a yoga bag.

She discovered that the reason why so many women are without bags is because they actually don’t like packing and unpacking in general. The yoga bags currently in the market are designed to fit mats snugly and leave little room for other things, making the final zipping up process a skilled challenge. Ho found that in order to make gym trips more hassle-free, the yoga bag would have to be more than just a mat bag. It would have to be big enough to easily throw in a mat along with a change of clothes and shower essentials while having enough compartments to organize much smaller things like keys, a wallet, and a cell phone. Of course, the students also emphasized that it be “cute.”

The oGorgeous yoga bag collection definitely takes fashion and yoga to another level. The line features luxurious satin lining, big bows, intricate designs, and can double as a chic oversized handbag. Will oGorgeous be able to cure the naked mat epidemic or will it just be a trend? We’ll let the fashionistas of fitness decide.
