Oct. 8, 2009 - PRLog -- Some artists focus on painting things - people, trees, mountains.  Gavin Brooks paints the air between the viewer and and the objects.  Through her use of glazes, layering transparent color on top of transparent color, Gavin creates imagery that evokes the mood of the day more than the species of tree in the midground.  The flow and softness of the final image belies the organized procedure that Gavin undertakes in producing a painting.  The article includes a number of great instructional tips as to that procedure, such as where to put a horizon line, and how to deal with edges.  The article also points out the lengthy observation experience that Gavin Brooks contributes to her work without brush to canvas.  Both nature and paintings, particularly in museums, have held Gavin's attention as she looks for how an artist from the past made a certain passage within his painting work, or as she memorizes cloud shapes that can pass so quickly.  The article "Capturing Atmosphere" is available in the November issue of "American Artist"

During Paint Wilmington, Gavin will be painting on site with subjects varying from the ocean to the Cape Fear River and downtown to area farmland.  The challenge is the limitation of time.  Not only does the daylight change by the minute, but the event is only a week long which limits the number of glazes that can dry.  Gavin's proficiency in both drawing and composition are likely to take center stage in her paintings during Paint Wilmington, while the larger works completed prior to Paint Wilmington will have the characteristic glow so well displayed in the article's photos.

Gavin Brooks will giving a talk at the Wrightsville Beach Museum in Wrightsville Beach, NC on Tuesday, November 10.  Admission is free

Gavin  will be joined by several artists in Wilmington, NC including Larry Moore, John Poon, and Xiangyuan Jie.  The painting days run from November 7 through the 14th with the exhibition of new work, as well as those larger pieces completed prior, opening to the public on Saturday November 14.  The exhibition will run through the end of December.  Admission is free.  For more information go to www.wallsgallery.com or call Walls at 910-343-1703.
