'The Dilettantes' Exposes the Gluttony of Digital Photography in One Act

For their day out at a world-renowned art museum, The Dilettantes (Willis and Jefferson) have set a goal for themselves: Take as many pictures of paintings as they possibly can to add to their collection of photos taken and never to be seen again. It should be easy to take photos of all the works of art because, after all, they have dedicated a whole hour to spend at the museum.

But little do these amateur art connoisseurs know, several obstacles will stand between them and possessing electronic clones of the world's finest art – from the flash fascists with security badges to the biggest obstacle of all: themselves. Can "The Dilettantes" keep themselves from thinking long enough to take the best pictures of paintings that they've ever seen themselves take?

"On a recent trip to Paris, I discovered what people are prepared to do to possess a piece of something deemed important," says Terry Dugan, the play's author, "and here I was all these years thinking no one really cared about art. Who knows how big art would be now had the camera-phone been invented 100 years ago?"
