By: Treework Environmental Practice After six years of promoting and applying the concept of tree statics as a method for assessing tree stability, Treework Environmental Practice are now proud to be the first company in the UK to purchase recently developed instruments in order to be able to offer a static load test and tree structural assessment (often referred to as the pulling test) in house, as part of an extensive and expanding range of arboricultural services. It is envisaged that Local Authorities, tree owners, land managers and arboricultural consultants will all see the potential offered by the static load test in the management of risks posed by the most valuable amenity and urban trees. Paul Muir of Treework Environmental Practice, who has organised and participated in all 60 of the commercially commissioned static load tests undertaken in the UK since 2004, commented: “This is an exciting time for Treework Environmental Practice and for the industry in general. A static load test frequently provides the confidence for us to recommend the retention of those trees that other methods would require to be felled or drastically pruned. An appreciation of tree statics fundamentally questions the conventional failure criteria currently often applied by the industry. This is also the only method currently available to provide information on root plate stability” Treework Environmental Practice has been a member of the SAG Baumstatik group since 2004; the only UK representative in this international group of experts that has been formed to develop the method and train new users. As a result of this commitment to fostering links with European practices Treework Environmental Practice are now acknowledged as the leading UK experts in the field of tree statics. Treework Environmental Practice will be involved with offering a training package and support to individuals and organisations interested in becoming practitioners of the method through offering a static load test service. Training will be offered in collaboration with Brudi & Partner, a German consultancy and fellow member of the SAG Baumstatik group. The instruments have been developed by German company Argus Electronic gmbh. The decision to commit to purchasing these instruments was reached by Treework Environmental Practice primarily because of the advantages offered by the newly developed wireless transmission of the test readings recorded directly into a data logger. The software to evaluate the test results has been developed by Brudi & Partner. Treework Environmental Practice will now be able to offer the test at a more competitive rate than previously due to this improvement in the efficiency of data collection together with the ability to provide the service directly from the company offices in Bristol. The advantages of the method have recently been dramatically illustrated through a high profile case in Crewkerne, Somerset (see coverage listed below). Treework Environmental Practice were commissioned in June 2009 to undertake a test on a Lucombe oak (Quercus x hispanica ‘Lucombeana’ Treework Environmental Practice hope to encourage further users of the method in the UK and welcome any enquires from interested individuals and organisations responsible for the management of trees for risk.
