| Residential Wind Turbines - Make Electricity For Your HomeWind energy is one of our oldest sources of power and is now one of the fastest growing sources of electricity in the world. Small wind generation systems provide electricity on-site for homes and farms.
By: Visa Solar For a wind power system to be worth while the average wind speed in your area should be at least 10 mph (4.5 m/s). With less wind you won't be producing enough electricity to warrant installing a system. Global wind speed maps are now available for free through the First Look application powered by Google maps. Wind speed maps of the US can be found on the Department of Energy website. Making your own solar and wind power for less than $200 http://create- There are three classes of residential wind turbines. The largest are household-sized. These systems are 1 kW - 20 kW and are ideal for homes, farms, ranches, and small businesses. Mini wind turbines are smaller typically ranging from 500 W to 5 kW, and are well suited for cabins and very small houses. Smaller yet are micro turbines which are good for powering recreational vehicles and sailboats, and for charging electric fences and other lower power tasks. As a general rule you will need at least one acre of land to install a free standing wind turbine. This much space allows the turbine to be far enough from the home to reduce noise as well as reduce wind turbulence caused by surrounding buildings and trees. The tower should be tall enough to minimize surface drag and turbulence but low enough for practicality. A rule of thumb is that the tower should be 30 feet (9 meters) higher than surrounding buildings in a 300 foot (90 meter) radius. Also become aware of local laws and regulations that may restrict windmill installation, particularly those requiring tall towers. If your neighborhood does have turbine restrictions or you have less than an acre of land, you might consider a rooftop wind turbine. Because these are mounted close to the roof, rather than 50 feet in the air, they experience more drag and wear on the turbine than other systems. The payoff from a rooftop turbine may still be worthwhile because often they cost much less, but don't expect to provide all of your household's power with one. These small systems are good for supplementing your main power source and are also good compliments to rooftop solar electric systems.
