Kincora Baseball welcomes HOF'er Brooks Robinson

July 13, 2009 - PRLog -- HALL-OF-FAMER BROOKS ROBINSON WILL SPEAK IN SUPPORT OF BASEBALL IN LOUDOUN COUNTY

DULLES, Va., July 13, 2009 – Hall-of-Fame legend Brooks Robinson will attend the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors public input session on Monday, July 20 to support the effort to bring minor league baseball to the area and is encouraging other supporters of baseball to join him as well.

Robinson is a member of the Kincora Baseball Advisory Board of Directors that is directing an effort to bring an Atlantic League (AL) franchise in time to play the 2011 season.  He is also in the ownership group of three AL teams.

"Brooks has developed a passion for the Atlantic League by being a hands-on owner," said John Horshok, chairman of the advisory board.  "His contributions to the game of baseball are legendary – but it was his specific support and involvement in the Atlantic League that got our attention when we weighed our best baseball franchise options," he added.  A franchise agreement has already been negotiated and an Atlantic League team will open the 2011 season in Loudoun if the project receives support from the Supervisors.

In addition to Robinson and Horshok – Kincora Baseball’s Board includes another Hall-of-Famer Harmon Killebrew, baseball executive Peter Kirk and Dr. Tom Songster who has worked over 40 years with the International Special Olympics and Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Killebrew and the rest of the board each spoke in support of the baseball effort at an earlier public hearing on June 8.

The July 20 public input session will provide an opportunity for speakers to give their viewpoint on the vote to allow a Special Exception for a baseball stadium at the Route 28/Route 7 Kincora site.  

Robinson was voted into the Baseball Hall-of-Fame in 1983 and distinguished himself as a legendary third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles by winning 16 consecutive Gold Gloves, playing in 15 straight All-Star Games, winning the American League MVP Award in 1964 and playing in four World Series during his 23-year career.

His first pro stop in baseball was in York, Pa. in 1955 and now he owns part of the York Revolution Atlantic League franchise – featuring a larger-than -life statue in the middle of Brooks Robinson Plaza at main entrance to the ballpark.  Robinson also has ownership in the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (Waldorf) and the Lancaster (Pa.) Barnstormers in the AL.
