Dr. Lee Schmitt strenthens Alabama Weight Loss Surgery position as Birmingham's leading bariatric surgery group with the introduction of single incision gastric banding.

July 9, 2009 - PRLog -- Dr. Lee Schmitt, a bariatric surgeon at Alabama Weight Loss Surgery, has made Gastric Banding even less invasive. The St. Vincent’s East surgeon recently placed a Realize Gastric Band while operating through only one incision rather than the four or five usually needed. “While the incisions used to place a Gastric Band in the traditional way are all small, one of the incisions has to be a little bigger, measuring about two inches, in order to get the Band into the abdomen and in order to bury the Band’s adjustment port. I just did the entire case through this one two-inch incision,” said Dr. Schmitt. Surgery done through one incision should result in even less post-operative pain and faster recovery than laparoscopic surgery done with multiple incisions. An improved cosmetic result is obvious.

Schmitt and his partner, Dr. Les Miles, are Alabama’s leading bariatric surgeons having placed over 1,000 Gastric Bands. They report their average patient loses half of their excess weight after this outpatient procedure. They were the first surgeons in Alabama to use Gastric Bands and are now the first to place one using this new technique. Dr. Schmitt says, “Our patients look great after surgery, and now they look even better with fewer scars.”
