| Supply Chain, Logistics Firm D.w. Morgan Goes Paperless, Eliminating Paper Way BillsGreen initiative saves stack of paper as tall as five-story building
By: Cook & Schmid By going paperless, D.W. Morgan removes some 150,000 pieces of paper—a stack as tall as a five-story building—from the consumption cycle each year. Eliminating the paper way bill also reduces the company’s material and labor costs. “At D.W. Morgan Co., the paper way bill has gone the way of leaded gasoline and land yachts,” said David W. Morgan, CEO and founder of D.W. Morgan Company. “This move is not only good for business, it’s good for the planet.” Earlier this year, D.W. Morgan developed an application for the Apple iPhone to communicate real-time shipment tracking reports and recipient signatures to its global customer base. The iPhone app is integrated into the company’s ChainLinq® Suite of transportation and inventory-management applications. D.W. Morgan has also reduced its carbon footprint, as well as that of its clients, through more efficient supply chain and logistics operations. By completely redesigning supply chains to reduce the movement of goods, it saves money and carbon. For example, Mattson Technologies had been flying large electronic components one at time from Shanghai, China, to Fremont, Calif. Morgan devised a plan that allowed the company to consolidate the shipments and transport four at a time in a container by ocean, increasing transportation efficiencies and reducing fuel consumption.
